Current Research Projects:
Renal Proximal Tubule Receptors & Toxic Ligands

The giant glycoprotein receptor, known as megalin, is heavily concentrated in the renal proximal tubule and placenta. Several lines of evidence suggest that this protein is a receptor for polybasic drugs such as the aminoglycoside antibiotics.

Overload with these proteins and drugs causes common clinical disorders. Overload of aminoglycoside antibiotics occurs even at therapeutic drug levels.

Specific Aims

Our working hypothesis is that analysis of mechanisms of polybasic drugs will suggest strategies for the design of protective agents.
