Twelfth Night, also called Epiphany or Three Kings Day, is the last of the "twelve days of Christmas" and the first day of the Carnival season, which culminates in Mardi Gras. "King Cake" is a round braided cinnamon loaf served at Carnival parties; it has a small plastic baby hidden inside. Whoever gets the piece with the baby in it has to bring a King Cake to the next Carnival party.

"Fat Monday" is the day before "Fat Tuesday", or Mardi Gras. Rex, King of Carnival, arrives aboard a Coast Guard cutter today at the Spanish Fountain. Parties and parades are in full swing today, building up to the big day tomorrow.

"Fat Tuesday" is the finale of the Carnival Season. The city is ruled for the day by Rex, King of Carnival, and no work gets done! This is the big day for masquing, revelry, and parades. Mardi Gras is indescribable, but here are some of the websites about Mardi Gras that make the attempt.
