New Orleans Compass Directions
In New Orleans the streets follow the bends and curves of the Mississippi River, or they run from the river to Lake Pontchartrain. Therefore we rarely use the words "north", "south", "east", and "west" for giving directions in the city. Instead, we say "upriver", "downriver", "riverside", and "lakeside". For example, the Tulane Medical Center campus lies upriver of Canal Street and lakeside of Loyola Ave.
