Transposition of the great vessels

This is the heart and lungs of a newborn infant. A probe extends thought he aorta into the right ventricle. The pulmonary artery arises from the left ventricle. This is called transposition the great vessels, and is the most common cyanotic defect present in the neonatal period. Survival depends upon septal defects which allow oxygenated blood into the right ventricle and into the systemic circulation.
