renal papillary necrosis
Look at the papillae in this kidney. Notice the pale grey infarcted
like zones in the papillae surrounded by an ischemic zone. These
are actually regions of necrosis, so-called renal papillary necrosis,
probably due to ischemia of the papillae. This occurs in people
with vascular disease often diabetics and particularly in the
presence of pyelonephritis.
