Renal failure can be caused by vascular disease external to the kidneys. This is an example of an aorta from a man who died in oliguria. Notice there is a saccular aneurysm in the abdominal aorta right at the bifurcation. Above this, there is severe atherosclerosis occluding the orifices of the renal arteries.
