Tulane requires students to pay the full cost of their externship in addition to regular tuition (and the cost of keeping apartments etc. in NOLA while you are away). In order to reduce the cost of the rotation as a discouraging factor in your decision to study away from Tulane, we are working on expanding the following list of organizations and programs that may help to make your externship dreams more financially attainable.

How to Write a Grant Proposal

excerpted from "How to Write a Grant Proposal" by the Congressional Research Service.

  • Preliminary Preparation - develop a description of your externship and general idea of what you will be doing there - contacts, day to day activities, projects that you hope to accomplish etc.
  • Search for Funding Sources - find specific, relevant sources and consider combinations of sources
  • Parts of the Proposal:
    1. Cover Letter - addressed to the specific individual at the funding source who will be approving funds ( you should have spoken with them prior to handing in the proposal and refer to previous discussions here). Brief outline of the needs addressed in the proposal, emphasizing the ways in which the project contributes to the goals of the funding source.
    2. Summary/Abstract - Write this after everything else! Include a description of the applicant, a description of the externship, a statement of the objectives to be achieved, an outline of the activities and procedures to be used to accomplish those objectives, and a statement of what it will cost the funding agency.
    3. Introduction - Introduce yourself, provide a CV if requested, generally let them know you are a solid investment
    4. Needs Assessment - provide specifics about the needs in the area that you are going to
    5. Objectives - describe the benefits of your rotation to the community as well as yourself
    6. Methods - describe what you will actually do (day to day, specific projects etc.)
    7. Evaluation - describe how you will evaluate your experience to let them know their money has been well spent.
    8. Budget - give a specific budget (flights, housing, living expenses, project costs etc.)
    9. Appendix - references and specific tables, statistics that help to strengthen your application (ie CV)
