POSSIBILITIES

As you can expect, they're endless. Drs. Hamrick and Theis are willing to listen to any proposal and generally approve credit for rotations that meet the basic requirements stipulated under Definitions and Basics.

Searchable Databases

Instead of reinventing the wheel, we've included links to the most highly recommended searchable databases that have been put together by different schools and organizations around the country. We've included some programs below that may or may not be listed in these databases just to make sure that you have access to the

most complete information possible. Also, check out the page on Funding for info on which programs have scholarships available.

Other highly recommended sites

If you have a subscription to JAMA they have an addendum section in most issues devoted to International Health Opportunities - you can check out the online version at http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/289/1/34

The Source and Exchanges

If you are starting early, are motivated and independent, and have a specific country in mind, you may want to go straight to the source and set up your own externship by communicating directly with doctors at hospitals in the country of your choice. The following websites have info on many doctors and hospitals that are interested in hosting American students (NB please do not contact more than three sites at a time - and note that "hosting" does not imply any financial benefits.)

  • Medical Electives In Developing Countries Website. This site has a database which has over 100 elective opportunities in 34 countries including quotes from students who have actually organized externships at these sites. In comparison to the AMSA list, this site has more info on rural locations in these countries.
  • International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA) - http://www.ifmsa-usa.org/ - the organization facilitates very inexpensive exchanges of medical students between countries, as well as supporting medical student created "Village Projects" in several countries including Ghana and Cameroon.

Organizations (some of these are listed on the searchable databases with links above).

GLOBAL

~~ These organizations have opportunities on more than one continent, but not necessarily every country.~~

ASIA

S/C AMERICA

AFRICA - ~~ Due to the vast magnitude of the AIDS epidemic, all sites in Sub-Saharan Africa are considered possibilties for "AIDS rotations". However, specific sites with the "^" have been recommended for their particular location or involvement in the epidemic and are also listed on a separate AIDS specific list.~~

US/MEXICO

  • The Indian Health Service (IHS) offers opportunities to work on reservations or in fairly large cities with a specific population - check out the clerkships/rotations section of their website for more info - PLEASE NOTE: IHS requests that you apply for their programs 1 year in advance - but some sites are more flexible on this deadline than others.
  • Mexico- CASA*

AIDS Specific list

Please note: The AIDS epidemic is such that an externship done in any country with a reasonably high AIDS rate can be considered an AIDS-specific rotation. For more information, see our Student Global AIDS Campaign-sponsored AIDS information page.

The lists above is merely to get you started on looking at organizations which offer opportunities that have been noted as particularly amenable to a fourth-year rotation. If you are interested in traveling abroad in a medical capacity for a shorter time period (1-2 weeks) there are many opportunities to do so listed on the AMSA and UMass websites that have not been listed here. If you know of any organizations or programs specific to the fourth year externship that would be useful to this list, please Contact CMIG (And if you know of any organizations that offer any international medical experiences of any length, also contact us and we will pass the information on to AMSA for use on their website.)

N.B. Much of this information was gathered from UMass, AMSA and PHR websites. We thank those organizations for their unintended but very generous help in compiling this list. If you are an evangelical Christian there are a lot of opportunities listed by specific religious organizations on the UMass site that have not been listed here. You can also get involved with Tulane's Medical Mission Aid Society.

* This info came from the UMass website - contact Dr. Mick Godkin's assistant Doreen McNamara at the International Medical Education center for more details.

** Foundation for International Education in Neurosurgery - offers opportunities in Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Peru, Thailand, Zimbabwe with new opportunities opening up all the time. UMass also has info on this program.
