T1 Electives - Department of Surgery

 
  Surgical Pathways

The pre-clinical student is given an introduction to the basics of Surgical Science including basic surgical skills, principles and opportunities for career development.

The course is a preceptorship with role-model surgeons to provide personalized instruction, teaching, and mentoring through experience in the operating room, clinic office, conferences, rounds and professional association. Subspecialties include vascular surgery, transplant surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, and breast surgery.

Grading Policy: Pass or Fail. Evaluation will be based upon participation by students through oral communication with the faculty complimented by brief oral examination.

Clinical Surgery Introduction

Students will meet with a surgical faculty member and will accompany him/her on teaching rounds at Tulane University Hospital, Elmwood or Lakeside Hospital.  Students will attend Surgical Grand Rounds on Wednesday morning. Students will be evaluated by participation in discussions with the faculty member.

Plastic Surgery Research Elective

The goal of this elective is to allow first and second year medical students who are interested in plastic surgery research an opportunity to gain further insight and be able to answer simple clinical questions in Plastic Surgery.  The course will consist of either simple laboratory projects or a clinical project, all with close staff supervision.

Vascular Surgery Introduction

The student will attend monthly Vascular Surgery conferences, participate in teaching rounds and clinic at Tulane Medical center. They will also have the option to view vascular surgical procedures.  Students will be evaluated on their interactions with the faculty.
