Anesthesiology (MDAS AS TMC)
Medical Students rotating through anesthesiology face the difficult challenge of
interacting within a discipline for which traditional medical education is inadequate
preparation. The specificity of anesthesia related procedures and pharmacology, as well
as changes to the normal physiologic milieu under anesthesia, make the learning curve of
a novice in anesthesia fairly steep. The rotation is designed to provide an
overview of the field with emphasis on basic procedures and insights into how we as
consultants in the practice of anesthesiology interact with our colleagues in both surgical
and non-surgical disciplines.
Your education during this rotation will be divided into three primary components:
- Supervised hands-on participation in the care of selected patients with
Anesthesiology faculty. In addition ot the genreal O.R. of TUMC, the
students may have the option to participate in Obstetrical Anesthesia, the Pain
Clinic, and SICU.
- Case-based teaching conferences encompassing several key topics in
Anesthesia. The areas to be covered will include: Airway management, Cardiac
Anesthesia, Thoracic Anesthesia, Neuroanesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Pain
Management, and Obstetrical Anesthesia.
- The student will be expected to attend and participate in resident's weekly
conferences and lectures.
The students will start each day at 7:00 a.m. and be assigned to an anesthesiologist
who will teach anesthetic principals of the patients that they are assigned to manage.
There are no night call duties and the students will be free at approximately 2:00 p.m.
Objectives: To gain compentancy and understanding of basic anesthetic and airway
management principles in the operating room setting.
Method of evaluation: The students' grade will be based on participation in the O.R.,
case conferences, and a written exam at the end of the elective.
Maximum number of students: 2
Prerequisite: None
Other elective opportunities are described below and may include departmental research projects
that are done under faculty supervision.
