General Neurosurgery Clerkship: Medical Center Of Louisiana (MDNS NS CH)
A clinical clerkship is offered at Medical Center of Louisiana for students who
are interested in general neurologic surgery. A rotation of a minimum of one
month, up to a maximum of 3 months, is available, during which time the student will be
assigned to the Tulane Neurosurgery service at Medical Center of Louisiana . This includes
taking call with the senior Neurosurgery resident, following patients through the initial
evaluation, diagnostic workup, surgery, and postsurgical care. This will allow the
student to become familiar with Neurosurgery as a subspecialty.
Also the student will participate in grand rounds each week and must present a selected
patient to the Weekly Staffing Conference. In addition, attendance is required at the
monthly citywide Neurosurgical Complication Conference. This rotation is suggested for
students who would like to have more exposure to general neurosurgery and become more
acquainted with neurological and neurosurgical diagnoses and treatment. No examination
is required for accreditation.
Students will take call with the assigned residents every third to fourth night.
At the end of the rotation, the student is required to present a neurosurgical
topic (a mini Grand Rounds) at the Friday morning Clinical Conference.

Neurosurgery Clerkship: V.A. Hospital (MDNS NS VAN)
This Selective will allow the interested student to spend 1 to 3 months on the VA
Neurosurgery service, during which time he/she will be assigned to the 4th year
Neurosurgery resident and the Neurosurgery faculty physician staffing the VA Hospital.
The student will see inpatients for initial neurological evaluation and then follow the
patient throughout the diagnostic workup, surgery, and postsurgical phases. Attendance
is required at the Weekly Staffing Conferences, Grand Neurosurgery Rounds, and the
monthly citywide Neurosurgical Complication Conference. No examination is required
for accreditation.
Students will take call with the assigned residents every third to fourth night.
At the end of the rotation, the student is required to present a neurosurgical
topic (a mini Grand Rounds) at the Friday morning Clinical Conference.

Location: V.A. Hospital
Pediatric Neurosurgery Clerkship: TMC and the Medical Center of Louisiana in New Orleans (MDNS PED TMC)
This Selective will allow students interested in Pediatric Neurosurgery to be assigned
to the faculty Pediatric Neurosurgeons, and will participate in the care of patients
on the pediatric service at TMC and the Medical Center of Louisiana in New Orleans.
The student will be under the direct supervision of the staff physician, and will be
involved in the initial evaluation of the patient, diagnostic workup, surgery, and
postsurgical care in these institutions as selected by the staff. Attendance is
required at the Weekly Staffing Conference and the monthly citywide Neurosurgical
Complication Conference. This rotation is for 1 to 3 months. No examination is
required for accreditation.

Neurosurgery Clerkship: Tulane Medical Center (MDNS NS TMC)
This one month selective will allow interested students to be assigned to the faculty
staff neurosurgeons at Tulane Medical Center Hospital. This rotation exposes the student
to the broad-spectrum of neurosurgical diseases and procedures encountered in the tertiary
referral center setting.
The student will be under the direct supervision of the staff physicians, and will be
Neurosurgery involved in the initial evaluation of the Neurosurgery patient, diagnostic
workup, surgery, and post-operative care of hospital patients. Attendance is required
at weekly conferences and the monthly citywide
Neurosurgical Complications Conference. The rotation is for one month and is limited to one student. No examination is required for accreditation.
Students will take call with the assigned residents every third to fourth night.
At the end of the rotation, the student is required to present a neurosurgical topic
(a mini Grand Rounds) at the Friday morning Clinical Conference.
