The Department of Pediatrics has particular scheduling needs in terms of the preparation of monthly
rosters so that it is imperative that students complete a request for change at least one month before
the start of the clerkship. No selective in Pediatrics may be "dropped" later than one month before
the scheduled start date. Please note that Pediatrics Electives are unavailable to International Visiting Students.

Students are given all the duties and responsibilities of a "first year house officer" in the care
of children and adolescents. They are assigned patients in rotation with the Pediatric house officers
for workup, and are expected to participate in the management of the patients while in the hospital
under the supervision of the senior resident and faculty. Work rounds are made daily and attending
rounds are made at least 4 times per week. Specialty rounds by consultants are made as indicated for
individual patients. Students are expected to attend the regular house officer conferences, which
occur five days weekly. Night call in the hospital is required every fourth night. No final exam.

NICU And Nurseries (Lakeside Hospital)

Students are assigned infants in the high risk nursery under the supervision of the residents and
attending staff. They are expected to take calls along with the housestaff, and to assist in all
procedures, including resuscitation of the newborn in the delivery room. Students are expected to
attend all of the house officer conferences (5) each week. Night call is required every fourth
night. No final exam.

On this clerkship, the student serves as a "Junior House Officer" under the direction of full-time
attendings. He/she will see patients in the outpatient clinic, admitting room, and emergency room.
On the wards, the students will have an opportunity to manage the care of children admitted from
the clinic. Meals and quarters are provided by the hospital. Night call is included. No final exam.

Pediatric Allergy/Immunology/Rheumatology - Tulane Hospital For Children

The student will act as a fellow with staff supervision in the evaluation of children with allergic
diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema), immunologic disorders or collagen-vascular diseases.
The student will participate in the care of inpatients and outpatients at Tulane Hospital for Children.
There will be four weekly clinics, daily rounds on inpatients, and several teaching conferences weekly.
Selected reading material will be provided. No exam and no night call.

Medical Genetics - Tulane Hospital For Children

The student will participate in clinical genetics evaluations in clinic and hospital consults.
There will be exposure to dysmorphic syndromes, inborn errors of metabolism, chromosomal syndromes,
adult-onset genetics disorders, and prenatal diagnosis. Emphasis will be on the clinical approach to
genetic differential diagnosis and testing. The student will also attend weekly genetics clinic
conferences and seminars. The student may prepare (student's choice) a literature survey in an
area of interest for presentation. No night call. No final exam.

Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinical Consultation Service - Tulane Hospital For Children
(Course Code: MDPD IDS C/T)
The student will be part of the pediatric infectious disease clinical team consisting of an attending
physician, a fellow, and 1-2 residents. Together they will make daily rounds at the Tulane Hospital
for Children and attend Pediatric Infectious Disease clinics, including Pediatric TB and HIV clinics.
As part of the team, the student will be responsible for seeing and evaluating all consultation
requests as well as for following active consultations requiring additional input from the service.
The student will be expected to read in depth about problems seen on clinical service and to develop
an approach to the evaluation and management of children with an infectious disease. This selective
is normally for one month, but depending on interest, can be for a longer time. No night call. No
final exam, but the student is expected to make a presentation of a topic at a clinical conference.

Med-Peds Selective
(MDPD MPD CH)
The student will spend four weeks under the supervision of Med-Peds faculty. The mornings will include
a combination private practice clinic or rounding on inpatients with the faculty member if they are on
service. Several afternoons each week will be in the clinic of one of the Med-Peds faculty preceptors.
One afternoon each week will be devoted to personal academic time. There are two Med-Peds noon
conferences during the month as well as a journal club the student will be expected to attend.
Objectives:
- Observe the multifaceted practice opportunities a career in Med-Peds affords.
- Enhance outpatient clinical skills.
- Observe office practices.
Outline:
M-F:
Round with staff in the morning on the inpatients or attend clinic.
Attend noon conferences with the residents.
Attend clinic with staff one to two afternoons per week.

Pediatric Nephrology - Tulane Hospital For Children
(Course Code: MDPD NEP C/T)
The student will function as a "Junior Fellow". He/she will actively participate in the evaluation
and management of patients with various renal diseases such as glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome,
congenital tubular disorders, obstructive nephropathy, and end-stage renal disease (dialysis/transplant)
at Tulane Hospital for Children. Daily rounds on inpatients, two weekly renal clinics and a series of
teaching conferences provide the student with the opportunity to evaluate patients in a variety of
settings. Experience with dialysis and transplantation and renal biopsy is included. No night call.
No final exam.

Pediatric Pulmonology - Tulane Hospital For Children
(Course Code: MDPD PUL C/T)
This Selective is established to provide the students with the opportunity to become involved in
depth with the care of children with respiratory disease. The student will be assigned duties as
a member of the Pediatric Pulmonary inpatient team that will involve inpatient and outpatient care
of such children at Tulane Hospital for Children. The outpatient experience may include Tulane
pulmonology clinics at Ochsner Clinic and other clinics in Baton Rouge and Lafayette. There are
also opportunities to gain expertise in pulmonary auscultation, chest radiograph interpretation,
special imaging flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and the evaluation of pulmonary function. No
night call. No final exam.

Coordinator. Please plan ahead to facilitate your registration or rotation changes. Note to Visiting
Students: Ochsner Foundation Hospital requires all visiting students to make arrangements for senior

Pediatric Cardiology

The objectives of this rotation are introduce the student to tertiary pediatric cardiology practice
and outpatient clinics; and to develop basic cardiology skills such as clinical examination. EKG
interpretation, basic echocardiography, catherization, intraoperative echo, post-op surgery
management and extra corporeal life support.

Pediatric Critical Care

This rotation focuses on the art and science of pediatric critical care. It will provide the
foundation for understanding the pathophysiology of acute life-threatening diseases and advanced
life supprot. IT will introduce the medical student to the experience of taking care of a
critically ill child and providing support for the family.

Genetics And Dysmorphology

Clinical experience in genetic evaluation of families with hereditary disorders, newborns and
children with congenital malformations and couples at prenatal risk seeking prenatal diagnosis.

Adolescent Medicine - Tulane Hospital For Children

Join the Adolescent Medicine faculty in the care of teens and young adults. Adolescents are the
most fun of all patients, and adolescent care spans all disciplines. Teens are approachable,
friendly, and have manageable problems. Learn how to be an important facilitator of youth
development. Varied sites, populations of teens, and styles of care are experienced in this
four week rotation. Emphasis is placed on the broad range of medical concerns that may require
a special approach with teens, as well as those psychosocial issues that influence the health of
adolescents. A menu of learning experiences expands your horizons and expertise. A syllabus of
reading materials is provided. Adolescent Medicine Journal club and community activities are
scheduled for some evenings or Saturdays that are mandatory. No night call. No final exam.
Transportation is strongly suggested.
