Urology
(Course Code: MDUR UR TMC or CH or VA)
Offered at Tulane University Medical Center, Medical Center of Louisiana, and
the V.A. Medical Center in New Orleans
Senior students will serve for 1 or 2 months under the direction of faculty
and the senior resident at each of the participating institutions. The
student will function as much in the capacity of an intern as can be permitted
under present medico-legal limitations. Ward rounds will be made daily
with the residents; attendance and participation in outpatient clinics will
be expected; and the student will assist in both diagnostic and operative
procedures. Weekly staff pyelogram conferences, IVP conferences, faculty
and resident lectures, daily sign out rounds with staff on call, and monthly
D & C Conferences are held and the student is expected to attend.
All outpatient clinics meet with an attending physician. Seminars and
Visiting Professor Programs are open to the student.

Male Infertility and Sexual Dysfunction/Andrology - Tulane Medical Center
(Course Code: MDUR MIS TMC)
A period of 1 to 2 months may be spent in the Male Infertility and Sexual
Dysfunction rotation at Tulane University Medical Center. Besides being
exposed to microsurgical vaso-vasostomy, microscopic varicocele repair, revascularization,
and prostheses work, the student(s) will be exposed to the clinical work-up
and laboratory evaluation of such patients.
In addition, our basic research laboratories involve studies on immunologic
infertility, computerized semen analysis, sperm stimulation, flow cytometry,
gene therapy for erectile dysfunction, cavernosal smooth cell culture, and
electroejaculation.

Urolithiasis And Endourology and Laparoscopy - Tulane Medical Center
(Course Code: MDUR URL TMC)
A period of 1 month may be spent on the urolithiasis management service
at the Tulane University Medical Center Hospital. Students will be given
an opportunity to see the recent advances in management of urolithiasis, such
as percutaneous ultrasonic and electrohydraulic lithotripsies and lasers,
rigid and flexible ureteroscopic procedures, as well as management of patients
on the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter. Also, the use of laparoscope
in Urology will be stressed during this rotation.
Students will be exposed to the rapidly advancing field of urologic laproscopy
endourology and management of urinary stone disease.

Urology Research/Urooncology - Tulane Medical School
(Course Code: MDUR RES TMS)
A. Rodney Davis, M.D., Assistant Professor of Urology
A period of 2 months and up to 3 months (if desired) can be spent in the
laboratory and clinical arena, devoting attention to research in the
areas of prostate cancer and bladder diseases. The student is exposed to
experimental design, execution of experiments and interpretation of experimental
data. The primary emphasis is to provide exposure to the scientific
method and thought process involved in experimentation relating to medical
science and the field of urologic oncology.
The areas of research explored on prostate cancer and bladder diseases
include:
1. Identification
of novel genes involved in prostate cancer progression using PCR-select cDNA
substractive hybridization methodology.
2. Enhanced sensitization
of cancer cells to radio-chemotherapy using an antisense approach.
3. Role of Rel/NF
- Kappa B in the pathogenesis in interstitial cystitis.

B. Asim Mageed, MD, Assistant Professor of Urology
1. Motility
laboratory: Equipped with 8 channel muscle bath, Grass polygraph and
a computer. Muscle strips from urinary bladder, ureter, vas, etc. are
tested for active and passive forces as well as for drug effects.
2. Latest equipment,
such as Laser Capture microscope are in use.
3. Urodynamic
studies (bladder pressure, abdominal pressure, EMG and uroflow) are performed
in normal and in bladder dysfunction.

Female Urology - Medical Center Of Louisiana And Tulane Medical Center
(Course Code: MDUR GYN C/T)
Mainly clinical clerkship for students interested in female urological
problems. Students who are considering urological or gynecological careers
will benefit the most. Operating room experience mixed with state-of-the-art
urodynamics and busy clinic are the main features. Participating in
related research is also recommended.
Objectives: Exposure to female urological pathology, learning
basics of urodynamics, conducting/participating in related research.
