Negotiating Complex Issues at the End of Life

Goals and Objectives

  1. Gain experience in breaking bad news about terminal illness to a patient.
  2. Discuss pain and symptom management with a patient who has a terminal illness.
  3. Discuss goals for care/expectations with a patient who has a terminal illness.
  4. Discuss "do not resuscitate" issues with a patient's family member.
  5. Address cultural and spiritual issues with a patient family member.

Minimum Number: 6

Agenda
Total time of seminar = 180 minutes

  1. Introduction/orientation - 5 minutes
  2. Review of previously distributed articles (maximum 2) - 15 minutes
  3. Break into 2 groups, (concurrent standardized patient/small group discussion with faculty facilitator)
    2 cases:
    Mr. Duke - recurrent colon cancer
    Issues:
    • Breaking bad news
    • Pain and symptom management
    • Expectations and goals for care
    Ms. Brown - mother dying of recently diagnosed terminal lung cancer
    Issues:
    • Discussing DNR orders
    • Cultural and spiritual concerns
Each student will participate in both case discussions. They will occur simultaneously and then the groups will switch. Each small group case has 80 minutes.
Total Standardized Patient Small Group Discussion = 160 minutes
