The two-month Internal Medicine clerkship provides the student with the opportunity to apply what has been learned in the pre-clinical courses and clinical diagnosis to the care of inpatients at University, Veterans Administration, and Ochsner hospitals. It is the expectation of the department that the student become proficient in his/her ability to approach a patient with a medical problem, elicit a complete history, perform a thorough physical examination, appreciate pertinent abnormal symptoms and signs, and organize such information in a concise and knowledgeable manner so that appropriate management may be undertaken. Students will become familiar with the clinical presentations and underlying pathophysiology of common medical diseases while learning within the framework of utmost professionalism and compassion for patients. The students are assigned to a general medicine ward service, where they are responsible for the initial assessment of non-ICU admissions on their call nights. The student is expected to perform a complete work up on at least one patient admitted, including a differential diagnosis and a plan of care reviewed with the admitting PGY I or II. The student is also expected to present this newly admitted patient on staff rounds the following morning, while being prepared to answer questions evaluating his/her knowledge of the pathophysiology of the problem. The student's work-ups, presentation, enthusiasm, and professionalism serve as the basis for the attending physician's evaluation of the student's performance. For more information, please see:
