Medicine/Law Elective: Professional Collaborations (MDID MLE TMC)
Goals and Objectives:
Through participation in this elective, medical students will:
- Learn the common areas of interface between medicine and law including:
- Rules of professional and ethical responsibility as they apply to the legal profession
- Techniques and skills required for successful collaboration between doctors and lawyers
- Skill development and practice including: preparing for and giving a deposition, serving as an expert consultant, expert witness testimony at trial
- Learn about the activities of the domestic violence criminal, juvenile and environmental law clinics as Tulane.
- Provide consultative services for ongoing cases being handled by student attorneys in these clinics.
Description:
Week 1 will consist of didactic/small group presentations by law school faculty providing background on the relevant
legal issues and skills. There will be extensive opportunity to practice skill development in consultation and testimony.
Week 2 will include site visits and consultations.
Possible site visits:
- Charity Hospital Emergency Room
- Coroner's office
- Courts (civil district, criminal district, juvenile, federal)
- Psychiatric/forensic facility
- Battered women's shelter
Students may be asked to:
- Accompany student attorneys to court, jail, and juvenile proceedings
- Attend meetings of case workers, lawyers and clients
- Visit domestic violence shelters
- Guide student attorneys on visits to emergency rooms and hospitals
Upon completion of the elective, students may be eligible to be retained (paid) as consultants to student attorneys
participating in Tulane School of Law Clinics.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on participation and on timely completion of assigned tasks and projects.
Enrollment: Elective is open to T1s and T2s. Minimum: 10; Maximum: 20 for Health I;
Minimum: 1 for Health II
Schedule: Sessions will be scheduled by consensus of students (medicine and law), faculty, clients, and
availability of site visits.
