FTPing with Fetch (Mac Users)

Configuring Fetch | Using Fetch

You've already downloaded Fetch from http://www.download.com or from one of the other freeware and shareware sources and have installed it on your computer. You are now ready to configure the application so it works for you.

The first time you open your Fetch application, you will get a dialog box that looks like this:

1. Hit the cancel button, go up under the "Customize" menu, and select "New Shortcut". This will open the Bookmark Editor dialog, which looks like this:

2. In the "Name" field, use a title that will remind you what server this is a shortcut to, so a name such as "SOM Server" or the like is good.

3. Leave "Type" as Unknown.

4. "Host" should be "dev.som.tulane.edu" unless you're placing pages on the restricted server, in which case you will need to login using your restricted user ID. Please note that you should not use the quotation marks in the actual dialog box.

5. "User ID" is the user ID that you have been assigned. If you are not sure, email webmaster@som.tulane.edu to determine your User ID.

6. You may fill the "Password" field in or leave it blank. If you leave it blank, the password will be requested each time you log in. Even if you fill it in, you will periodically be asked to confirm the password.

7. "Directory" should be public_html. By entering this in now you will ensure that each time you log in, you log directly into the folder that contains your webpages.

8. When all this information is filled in and has been checked for accuracy, press "OK".

In order for this set-up to appear as the starting shortcut, it is necessary to select it in your preferences. To do this, go up under "Customize" and select "Preferences...". You will get a box that looks like this:

Select the name of the shortcut that you just created from the pop-up menu next to "Default shortcut:". Leave the other fields on this screen as they are.

Once this is done, you may now hit the "OK" button - you're ready to stat FTPing!

Using Fetch (Macs only)

Open Fetch by double-clicking the icon. A dialog box similar to this should appear:

Fill in your password if you did not elect to have it saved, and click "OK". You should get two windows that open, looking something like this:

(Note: It will not look exactly like this on your desktop, but it should be fairly similar.)

You should be able to see all the files in your directory in the upper window. The other window serves as a message center for the server; for the most part, all it will say is that you've logged in, things are ready to go, and there will be another message when you log out. If we happen to bring the server down for maintenance or the like while you're logged in, a message to that effect will appear, but that hardly ever happens.

To Upload Files: If you have new versions of a particular page on your desktop that you would like to send up to the server, hit the "Put File..." button. This will open a box showing the files on your desktop - use it to browse your hard drive for the file you would like to send to the server. If you do as we recommend and keep all your webpages in one file, the box will generally open with that file highlighted after the first time you locate it for Fetch.

Highlight the file you wish to put on the server and click the "Open" button. You will get a box like this:

If the file is an HTML file, make sure the format is listed as "Text". If it is an image file, make sure the format is listed as "Raw Data". Then click the "OK" button and watch it go.

Usually after the first time you place your files on the server, you will be replacing individual files or images. The first time, however, you may have a number of items that you want to send to the server, and doing it one at a time can get cumbersome and tedious. You can send more than one item at a time by going up under the "Remote" menu item and choosing "Put Folders and Files". This displays a dialog box that allows you to choose a number of items to send to the server all at once.

To Download Files: If there are files on the server that you would like to bring down to your desktop, you can get them by highlighting the file you want from the server and clicking on the "Get File..." button. A window will prompt you for the folder on your hard drive where you wish to have this file saved. Once you've selected the folder, click "OK" and it will copy to that location.

To Delete Files: If you have files on your site that you wish to delete, you may highlight the particular file, go up under "Remote" and select "Delete Directory or File...". Please be extremely careful about which files you delete!! Make sure that you have a back-up of all files on your hard drive, including old files (I keep them inside another folder titled "old stuff" just so I have them if ever I need them) before you delete anything. We do back up all the files on the server, but trust me, we won't be happy about digging out one single file from among 13,000!

To Rename Files: In Fetch, highlight the file you wish to rename. Go up under "Remote" and select "Rename Directory or File...". A window will open asking for the new file name. Type in the new file name and click on the "OK" button. Remember, if you change the name of a file and still have links to the old file name, they will no longer work.
