Before moving to New Orleans to start medical school at Tulane in 2000, Dr. Stuart Bagatell was a seventh grade science teacher in Boca Raton, Florida for 3 years.  During medical school, he earned an award for Outstanding Project and Presentation by a Medical Student for his research on hypertension using transgenic rats.  He was also a member of the Arnold Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society.  During his residency, he was chosen as Intern of the Year in 2005.  That same year, he was honored with the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching award.  In 2007, Dr. Bagatell was honored with the distinction of Resident of the Year.  In 2007-2008, Dr. Bagatell served as chief resident, as well as being an active member on the Ethics Committee, IRB Committee, and Emergency Management Committee.  He will begin his appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine in July 2008.
Dr. Bagatell is actively involved in educating medical students and residents.  He provides patient care in both the outpatient and inpatient realms which includes working at the Covenant House clinic, University Hospital, Tulane Hospital, and St. Margret’s Nursing Home in the Bywater.

Research Interests
During Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Bagatell was stationed at University Hospital for 5 nights and 6 days.  After that experience, he helped to develop the department’s Elite Code Grey Army, a group of residents and staff dedicated to learning about disaster preparedness.  Part of this work involves recruiting and selecting residents to serve in the event of another disaster, reviewing and writing protocols for the Army to follow in the event of a disaster, as well as helping to design and implement a core curriculum for disaster preparedness training and education.
