Biography
After completing a year as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine, Michelle M. Guidry joined the Tulane University Health Sciences Center and the Tulane University Medical School faculty in 2006. She has an appointment of Assistant Professor of Medicine and works as a hospitalist where she is actively involved with both resident and medical student education.
At the end of her first year as faculty, she won the C. Thorpe Ray Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award and then completed the Harvard University School of Public Health Summer Program in Clinical Effectiveness. During the summer program, Dr. Guidry studied “Improving Quality in Healthcare” taught by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement’s Maureen Bisognano, Donald Berwick, and others. This sparked her interest in quality improvement and patient safety.
During her second year as faculty she became increasingly involved in Tulane University Health Science Center’s multidisciplinary quality improvement activities where she participated in projects focused on medication reconciliation, hospital discharge flow, and other transitions of care foci. In the spring of 2008 she was appointed Quality Officer for the Department of Internal Medicine and to the Tulane University Simulation Center and Patient Safety Team Training Committee.
She is currently designing a Quality Improvement Internal Medicine Residency Curriculum scheduled to launch July 1, 2008.
Research Interests
Dr. Guidry’s research interests currently involve physician communication during transitions of care, improving resident proficiency in quality improvement and patient safety, and the impact of the pharmaceutical industry’s interaction with healthcare professionals.
