Nephrology Fellowship Program
Back to the Tulane Nephrology Home Page

Thank you for expressing an interest in the Nephrology Fellowship Program at Tulane University School of Medicine.

The fellowship program is organized so that the first year is spent learning clinical skills at Tulane University Hospital, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Charity Hospital of New Orleans and the Outpatient Dialysis Unit, all of which are adjacent to the medical school. During this time the fellow is expected to master the basic aspects of clinical nephrology including acid-base and electrolyte disturbances, hypertension, hemo- and peritoneal dialysis, renal biopsy and transplant nephrology. Inpatient and outpatient management of renal transplant donors and recipients is learned at the Tulane University Hospital and Clinic; the Charity Hospital and VA Hospital Renal Clinics also provide a wealth of clinical material. The patient population seen in these facilities provides an opportunity that is unmatched in providing the trainee with exposure in all aspects of nephrology.

The second year of fellowship training will be spent in further clinical training or in either the laboratory performing basic science research, or performing clinical research studies.

The Nephrology staff currently consists of seven full-time plus three part-time faculty members. There are two first year and four second year fellows. In addition to research projects with the Nephrology faculty, collaborative research opportunities are also readily available with other departments, which work closely with the Section of Nephrology. In particular, excellent research opportunities exist in Pediatrics, Physiology, and Biochemistry. The teaching program consists of a regular renal biopsy, journal club, transplant and research conferences. There are weekly case presentation conferences, and also Nephrology Grand Rounds.

Beginning in 2007, applications will be accepted only through ERAS. Please note at this time we do not accept H1-B status applicants.

Thank you for your interest in the Tulane Nephrology Training Program. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to call me. We look forward to hearing from you.
