Attendance is required at all clerkship activities.
It is absolutely mandatory for you to attend the orientation and the four didactic sessions given (two at the beginning of the clerkship and two at mid-block)
- Absence to any session requires prior permission in writing.
-
Failure to satisfactorily complete the orientation and didactic sessions will require separate evaluation of the skills by a separate and comparable method of remediation. This will ensure appropriate knowledge and skill acquisition. Failure to comply with this requirement will be reviewed by the Student Performance Committee and may jeopardize graduation.
-
If you miss any of the first two didactic sessions, you must submit a 3 to 5 page paper on each didactic lecture and submit it by mid-block of the rotation. If you miss any of the mid-block didactic sessions, you must submit a 3 to 5 page paper on each didactic lecture and submit it by Wednesday of the last week of the block prior to sitting for your SHELF examination.
If you are absent, you must notify those faculty members who supervise your clinical experiences (attending of the month) and the Clerkship Coordinator.
** Unexpected absences: In the case of an unexpected, single day absence due to illness, you must notify the senior resident on service and the Clerkship Coordinator. If you are unable to contact the clerkship coordinator, you should notify the staff in Office of Student Affairs. If the absence is of greater duration than one day, you MUST notify the Office of Student Affairs, the supervising attending, and clerkship coordinator.
** Planned absences: In the case of planned absences, you must have prior approval from the Office of Student Affairs of the approved dates for the absence. Preferably, the student should meet with the clerkship director as far in advance as possible to discuss the requests and obtain the permission of the clerkship director to be absent from assigned responsibilities before notifying Student Affairs.
We will allow only 6 days of absences during the clerkship: 3 absences each per four week session. If you exceed this, it will be reviewed with the Student Performance Committee to decide the best course of action, most probably repeating the clerkship. |
