Dear Students,
Welcome to the Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship at Tulane University School of Medicine! The clerkship is an eight week clinical rotation. It will allow you to experience primary and preventive care of women across all ages. You will learn how to evaluate, manage, and treat conditions frequently faced by the obstetrician and gynecologist in an acute, outpatient, and inpatient setting. Lastly, you will be introduced to basic principles and techniques of surgery which women undergo. It has been designed to maximize your exposure to the myriad paths you can choose from within the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as introduce you to the subspecialties of reproductive endocrinology, basic urogynecology, gynecology-oncology, and maternal-fetal medicine. You can explore the option of a career in a private setting, academic setting, or one that is primarily research-based.
Even if you decide this is not the career for you, I encourage you to keep an open mind and be motivated to learn as you will develop the skills, knowledge, and attitude that will help you become both a better physician and person.
Prior to the start of your clerkship, please read the following: "The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship: Your Guide to Success"
I look forward to meeting and getting to know each of you in the coming weeks. Good luck and if I can be of assistance to you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Kristine Strickland, M.D.
