Peter R. Kastl, M.D., Ph.D., RP

is Professor of Ophthalmology and Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry at Tulane. His areas of clinical expertise include cataract, refractive, and corneal surgery, which he performs and teaches to residents and fellows. His subspecialty research interest is contact lens technology and fitting. He has taught lens fitting all over the world, and he specializes in difficult fitting, such as for keratoconus, high astigmatism, and post-refractive surgery. Dr. Kastl also is a Registered Parliamentarian.

He was President of the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO) for 2003, and he is the Editor-in-Chief of Contact Lenses: The CLAO Guide to Basic Science and Clinical Practice, the 900+ page book published by CLAO.

Dr. Kastl is a member of several organizations, including being a Fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the medical school honor society.

Dr. Kastl offers LASIK to his patients as a complement to contact lens wear. If a patient becomes lens-intolerant, then refractive surgery offers an alternate source of vision correction.

In addition, Dr. Kastl has started a Tulane initiative in implanting INTACS in keratoconus patients, as lens-intolerant keratoconus patients heretofore have had little recourse other than corneal transplantation.
