Mission Statement
The purpose of the residency program is to train our residents
to become the best otolaryngologists possible and to instill in
them a life-long interest in continuing education. As a result of
the diverse exposure obtained in the Tulane program, our residents
have an opportunity to work with a variety of faculty members each
of whom have something unique to contribute to the educational process.
Furthermore, Tulane residents have the opportunity to see a wide
spectrum of diseases of the head and neck because of the diverse
patient population served by our residency. Finally, Tulane has
an outstanding educational program including lectures, interactive
conferences, courses and other venues that provide the resident
with an unequaled opportunity to learn.
Although the faculty is available to assist the residents as they
progress through the program, each resident must develop the learning
habits required to maintain the learning process after completion
of the residency. Each resident learns differently and what works
for one may not work for another. The faculty is ready to assist
the residents in this process, but will not spoon feed the residents.
The resident must be an active participant in the educational process:
"Medical education is not a spectator sport."
The American Board of Otolaryngology examination is the measure
of the minimum requirements to practice otolaryngology. However,
it is not the goal of this program to train residents just to pass
the ABO exam. Our goal is to instill in the resident the desire
to continue the educational process long after completion of the
residency and passing the ABO exam. If the resident is having educational
difficulties,he/she should take advantage of the experience of the
faculty by seeking assistance.
