N.O. Night time
New Orleans, one of America's most livable and certainly most interesting cities. New Orleans is a unique and harmonious blend of the old and the new. Money magazine's 1989 survey of the best places to live ranks New Orleans 12th among 300 major U.S. metropolitan areas. Cradled within a crescent on the lower Mississippi River, New Orleans began as a French colony in 1731. It was then ruled alternately by the French and Spanish until the Louisiana Purchase by the United States in 1803. The Vieux Carre, or French Quarter, is the site of the original settlement. The streets in the Vieux Carre remain essentially as they were 250 years ago.Much of the original charm of the city is reflected in its architecture, language, cuisine and unique traditions.
From the Vieux Carre, the city spreads to other areas, each developing a distinctive culture, architecture and attractions. The historic Garden District is a magnificent assemblage of antebellum and Victorian mansions. Newer residential areas are found in the uptown University section (Tulane University, Newcomb College and Loyola University) and along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. The medical center is located in the central business district, within walking distance of the French Quarter, the Mississippi River, Canal Street and scenic St. Charles Avenue. Not only is the area the regional center for health care programs, but it continues to be the hub for the city's commercial, cultural and recreational activities.
New Orleans is renowned for Mardi Gras, the New Orleans Saints football team, traditional jazz, numerous conventions, festivals, and its exemplary cuisine served in restaurants ranging from elegant Antoine's to colorful oyster bars and small, family-owned ethnic restaurants. The city boasts many cultural offerings, including the Theater for the Performing Arts, New Orleans Museum of Art, the Symphony, the splendid, world-class Audubon Zoo, Aquarium of the Americas, and many small galleries and theater companies. A cosmopolitan city, New Orleans is perfectly suited to a variety of lifestyles.
