What is an Academic Training Program?
Academic physicians combine traditional patient care with research, while working at the same time to improve the field of pediatrics as a whole. They perform research, sit on advisory panels, and teach, in addition to taking care of children. Training programs around the country have increasingly turned away from the academic model. More and more, physicians are made to chose between a career in research or a career treating patients. At Tulane, the academic model has been preserved. World-class researchers will join you for Morning Report and will be your inpatient Attending, making rounds every day. They will share their enthusiasm with you when medical breakthroughs are made. They will give you the background on the people who write the papers upon which guidelines are based. They will give you the mentorship to get you where you want to be.
