Flexibility

While our training program is very well established, originating in 1927, it remains very flexible. Efforts are constantly made to improve the quality of our education and clinical experiences. This flexibility can be seen in modifications to the call structure, elective experiences, training pathways, and generally is a part of the culture.

Training pathways

Although most residents choose to train according to the standard pediatric pathway, there are a number that choose alternate pathways, depending on their backgrounds and interests. For example, one former resident used the Integrated Research Pathway available from the American Board of Pediatrics. This Integrated Pathway allowed him to conduct extensive field research (for a total of 12 months) on the ecology of mosquito larvae during the course of his three year residency. (This option is available to residents who have a PhD and an MD upon starting their residency training.)

Other residents have chosen the option of completing their residency training program after two years of training, and then were accepted into either Pediatric Neurology or Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. The American Board of Pediatrics has approved our residents to enter both of these programs. We have also successfully petitioned the American Board of Pediatrics to abbreviate the duration of residency training for residents that have already completed a residency in Emergency Medicine.
