Professional Development

What do you want to do for your career? What do you need to do to get to where you want to be? As the number of pediatric subspecilaties increases and the number of people completing multiple residencies grows, it has become ever harder to figure out what path is right for you. Beyond figuring out what, specifically, you want to do, there is a jungle of information to sort through: application timelines, pre-requisites, letters of recommendation, and even custom tailoring your curriculum vitae. Who knows what post-residency training options are available, and when their application cycles are? We do.

Our residents wanted someone to help them through these mazes of options and processes. And so that is who we got: Rebecca Hutchings. Dr. Hutchings knows how difficult the process can be: she completed a four-year Emergency Medicine residency training at Old Charity through Louisiana State University. She had a desire to do emergency pediatrics, and so petitioned the American Board of Pediatrics to allow her to complete the training in 2.5 years- an option available to those that have completed another residency. Her pediatrics training was done in our Tulane/Ochsner program, afterwhich she was recognized by her peers as the Most Outstanding Resident of the Year. Subsequently, she was hired as the Director of Emergency Pediatric Services for the entire Ochsner Health System, with an appointment as Associate Program Director for the Tulane/Ochsner Pediatrics Residency Program. As an Associate Program Director, her primary focus will be professional development for the residents. While all residents benefit from experience with conducting research and giving presentations, she will also facilitate subtler aspects of career development for residents, such as interview preparation and contract negotiation. When the path ahead gets murky, she is available to shine some light on your position and give you the encouragement to get to where you want to be for your career.
