Welcome to the Tulane / Ochsner Pediatric Training Program!

The Tulane Department of Pediatrics Residency Training Program was established in 1927 to teach the fundamentals of child/adolescent health care. In 1991 Tulane partnered with Ochsner Hospital and Clinic to allow a flexibility in the training program that is unsurpassed in pediatric residency programs. We offer a unique, innovative experience that will prepare you for a rewarding career in pediatrics.

We are an academic program, training physicians to be the leaders in the field of pediatrics. On wards and in the clinics, residents work with faculty renowned for their research as well as their clinical expertise.

We are looking for future leaders to train. Where do we look? Leaders in the field of pediatrics tend to come from backgrounds that provide a unique point of view. We’ve had good experiences with young physicians with an interest in international health and engaged in travel. We’ve trained physicians who have already completed training in emergency medicine. Similarly, physicians interested in combining the fields of medicine and pediatrics; or combined training in pediatrics, psychiatry, and child psychiatry disproportionately end up in academia, publishing research, and developing the field of pediatrics as a whole. Physicians that have demonstrated an interest in research or academia by obtaining an MPH or PhD prior to applying are also appealing. You don't need extra degrees or an interest in combined residency to train at Tulane, but we do want people who are interesting, and interested in becoming leaders in the field of pediatrics. These are the types of residents that we are interested in having in our program.

Program Highlights

The Tulane/Ochsner Pediatrics Residency Program has a number of unique features- beginning with the name. It is a joint experience with approximately half of each resident’s time spent at each institution. By having two large institutions available for training experiences, residents become comfortable treating a wider variety of patients than is typically possible in pediatrics training.

In part because of the joint nature of the program, our training experience is very flexible. Beyond that the Chairmen at both Ochsner and Tulane are very responsive to the requests of the residents. Excellence in training is a top priority of both sets of faculty.

As an additional advantage, both Tulane and Ochsner Hospitals use the Children's Hospital Within A Hospital Model rather than being free-standing Childrens' Hospitals. While working on in-patient services, residents work with Tulane or Ochsner faculty. Primary care providers admit patients to Hospitalists, and while communication with community physicians is maintained, they do not dictate care while on your service.

The diversity of patients to which residents are exposed includes both the socioeconomic and cultural diversity that is part of New Orleans. Additionally, residents see a diverse range of disease states characteristic of lower-volume programs and augmented by the tremendous bredth of clinical expertise that our faculty possess.

Professional development in the field of pediatrics has become increasingly complex as options have expanded. You want a person dedicated to the professional development of residents in the program where you complete your residency training. You will have that in the Tulane/Ochsner program.
