Program Overview
Our Teaching Philosophy
A Synergistic Approach
The departments of pediatrics at the Tulane University School of Medicine, the Tulane Hospital for Children and the Ochsner Clinic Foundation are pleased to offer prospective residents in pediatrics a well-rounded program. Primary care, tertiary care, managed care and pediatric education are combined in public and private facilities all located in the unique, historic city of New Orleans. Integration of teaching staffs, medical technology, hospitals, training programs, libraries and research facilities optimize each house officer's learning experience. This synergism provides more learning opportunities, increased depth and breadth of experience, and an enhanced benefits package.
Tulane and Ochsner are committed to education and to a tradition of excellence. The curriculum has been carefully developed to take full advantage of the multiple resources available, giving major emphasis to the best training experience possible. Moreover, the senior faculty staff are committed to cordial relationships with residents, so that all physicians work and learn together in a spirit of collegiality, friendship and mutual respect.
Residents elect representative members from each level of training to participate with faculty on our departmental Graduate Medical Education Committee and make important contributions in decisions effecting their education. Resident input is key and influences all decisions on curriculum and rotations.
All patient care decisions are channeled through the patient's primary care physician - the resident.
Appropriate supervision by faculty maximizes patient benefit.
Responsibility for patient care increases throughout the resident's time in the training program.
The curriculum depends on a balance of education and service.
All of our physicians practice in the spirit of collegiality, friendship and mutual respect.
The Tulane/Ochsner program places an emphasis on the pediatrician as an advocate for children and as a member of a larger community.
