RENAL PHYSIOLOGY

Renal Physiology is a 3 credit intermediate level course designed to provide graduate students with an in-depth understanding of the essential components of renal, fluid and electrolyte physiology. The prerequisites for the course are Physiology 601 and Physiology 604.

Emphasis is focused on the general principles governing glomerular filtration and the tubular transport of various solutes and water. Major topics covered include: mechanisms regulating glomerular filtration and the renal circulation; epithelial transport by the various nephron segments; renal growth, differentiation and development; paracrine, humoral and neural control mechanisms; renal regulation of acid-base balance; and the multifaceted regulation of salt and water balance.

The course is held in the Fall Semester and comprises didactic lectures, literature discussions and student presentations of relevant journal articles. Students are also required to write a term paper relevant to any of the major topics covered in the course. The course concludes with a final exam.
