The Basic Science Departments in the Health Science Center include the departments of Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Microbiology and Immunology, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Structural and Cellular Biology. These departments provide advanced studies in these fields leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science. Interdisciplinary programs in Neuroscience and in Molecular and Cellular Biology also award the Ph.D. degree.

The Graduate School offers programs leading to the degree of Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy. It additionally offers a combined degree program for eligible medical students whereby the degrees of Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy may be obtained concurrently with the Doctor of Medicine degree.

The Tulane Medical School complex is centered on Tulane Avenue in downtown New Orleans. It has four main units for basic science research: the interconnected Hutchinson Memorial Building, Libby Memorial Building, Burthe-Cottam Memorial Building, and the new research complex designated the Bioenvironmental Health and Safety building. The principal features of the buildings are: a large auditorium, lecture rooms ranging in size from seating for a small section to seating for an entire class, class laboratories, research laboratories for faculty members and students, faculty and administrative offices, and the Library. The 300-bed Tulane University Hospital, located across the street, is also a teaching hospital. Nearby buildings house other components of the Health Science Center, including the School of Public Health and many clinical and administrative offices. The Health Science complex affords facilities for a high standard of instruction in accord with the demands of modern medical education.

The Department of Physiology offers graduate training toward the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees and provides lectures, laboratory instruction, and research opportunities for medical and graduate students. The department occupies the 4th floor of the Burthe-Cottam Building and encompasses approximately 12,500 feet. The major portion of this space is allocated for research and graduate training.
