Dr.
Foundas is an experienced neurologist with special interest and
expertise in the evaluation and treatment of neurogenic dysphagia.
She has considerable experience in the diagnosis and management
of acute stroke patients and follow up of post stroke dysphagia.
In addition, she has special training in neuropsychology and behavioral
neurology and has command of a variety of diagnostic and research
tools including neurobehavioral assessment, neuroimaging and conventional
imaging and volumetric MRI scans. She also has extensive experience
in other neurogenic causes of dysphagia which include degenerative
dementias and neuromuscular diseases
Dr.
Foundas has wide ranging research activities: "Lesion Localization
And Dysphagia; Hemisphere And Cytoarchitectonic Site," "The Role
Of The Insular Cortex In Dysphagia," "Swallowing Apraxia In Acute
Stroke" and "Lesion Site In Unilateral Stroke Patients With Dysphagia,"
"Aspiration in Acute Stroke Patients," "Clinical Assessment of Swallowing
and Prediction of Dysphagia Severity" and "Clinical Pathway for
Dysphagia Management In Acute Stroke."
Dr.
Foundas is the Director of the Neurology Residency Training Program
at Tulane and Co-Director of both the Neurology-Psychiatry Residency
Training Program and Neurology-Internal Medicine Residency Training
programs. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including
the Leadership Award by the Massachusetts Psychological Association
1979, Rennick Research Award, International Neuropsychology Society
1993, and a NIH Student Grant (HL07495) LSU Medical School 1983.
In addition, she also has 26 publications in peer reviewed journals
to her credit as well as 40 abstracts many of which have been presented
to national meetings of various professional societies.
