PLASTIC SURGERY RESEARCH

The Tulane Plastic Surgery research program is directed by Dr. Ernest Chiu. Both basic science and clinical research projects are available. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone considering plastic surgery as a career.

Basic Sciences Research

Delivery of Human Adipocyte and Bone Marrow Derived Stem Cells using Acellular Dermal Matrix

This is a collaborative effort with Dr. Eckhard Alt and Donald Phinney at the Tulane School of Medicine Gene Therapy Center. We are utilizing in vivo models to study the role of MSCs in wound repair, bone healing, and nerve regeneration. Our goal is to manipulate the microenvironment in a favorable manner using MSCs.

Clinical Sciences Research

1. Microcirculation in Periorbital and Cheek Region

2. Breast Reconstruction (Techniques & Quality of Life Issues)

3. Head & Neck Reconstruction (Anatomical Studies)

4. Vascular Malformation

5. Diabetic Wound Repair using Human Adult Stem Cells

Research Space

Currently, the Division of Surgery has research space in the Clinical Sciences Building on the Tulane School of Medicine Campus. The laboratory is equipped with modern surgical dissecting microscopes, gel electrophoresis, protein purification, tissue culture hoods, EMG recording, etc. The majority of our collaborators are located in the same building. A certified animal care facility is also in the building.

Research Funding

Currently, the Department of Surgery is providing financial support. We are actively seeking research grants from organizations such as NIH, NCI, and PSEF.
