Andrology
- The field of Andrology involves sexual dysfunction, male infertility, reproductive toxicology and microsurgical reconstructive procedures in the male. At Tulane we have kept pace and made a number of significant contributions to this rapidly evolving subspecialty of Urology.
- Sexual dysfunction affects more than 20 million American men. Simple, non-invasive diagnostic tests i.e. Duplex Doppler ultrasound, rigiscan, etc. can aid the clinician in selecting the most appropriate therapy for this correctable problem. Our basic and clinical research are investigating novel intracavernosal and oral medications to overcome erectile dysfunction; explore molecular and cellular mechanisms of diabetes, and age related events leading to sexual dysfunction utilizing in-vivo and in-vitro approaches.
- Infertility may be the initial presentation of serious medical conditions. Often it can be treated without the great emotional and financial costs of the newer assisted reproductive technologies. Our use of vibratory stimulation, electroejaculation, microepididymal sperm aspiration with intracytoplasmic sperm injection techniques have resulted in many successes, but only when these higher order techniques are indicated.
- Environmental toxicants, including stress induced certain radicals which damage the reproductive system. One of the focus of our research is on evaluation of such toxicants and the interacting mechanisms.
- Our multi-dimensional approach to andrological problems is a model for many institutions in the country.
