A review of clinical records of 556 penile implant procedures over the past 10 years at Tulane University Health Sciences Center found no significant change in the rate of penile prosthesis procedures being performed on an annual basis. However, the complexity of procedures and the severity of illness have increased.

Despite the introduction of new, safe, and effective oral medications for ED, penile prosthesis continues to be a highly acceptable form of managing ED. Complexity and number of revision procedures during the past 10 years, especially with Peyronie's disease, and a predominantly complex series has been the trend.

Based on this study, an increasing number of prosthetics may be anticipated in the upcoming years secondary to an aging population, increased public awareness, availability of durable and effective treatments, and more patients seeking evaluation and treatment.
