The History of Medicine Society (HOMS) at Tulane

Welcome to HOMS!

About Us

The Tulane University History of Medicine Society is one of the oldest History of Medicine Societies in the United States, and the oldest student run organization of its kind. Founded in 1933 by a group of ten medical students led by B. Bernard Weinstein, the group has continued to promote and foster interests in the historical background of contemporary medicine and the tradition of the humanities in medicine.

Activities

HOMS is an active, inclusive organization that strives to involve all students at all levels, faculty, deans and the rest of the Tulane University Medical Community. HOMS sponsors several lunch lectures each semester, during which Dr. Wallace Tomlinson (our advisor) or a guest lecturer shares an aspect of the history of medicine with students over lunch. Popular past lecture topics include a two part lecture on the History and Development of Western Medicine, and single lectures covering Yellow Fever, The Plague, the History of Tulane Medical, and the ever-entertaining (and not-medically related!) spring lecture on the History of Mardi Gras. In addition to these educational lectures, HOMS hosts an annual wine and cheese gathering with faculty, deans and students at the home of Dr. Wallace Tomlinson in the fall and the B. Bernard Weinstein Memorial Lecture and Banquet each spring. At the banquet, the five winners of the HOMS annual History of Medicine Paper Contest are announced and recognized formally for their achievement.
