OBSERVE IN THE E.D.
So, you wanna observe in the Emergency Department?
Please note: This is for TEMIG members only. Any Tulane student can become a member by paying $10 dues.
ED observation does not earn service hours for Foundations in Medicine.
Here are your directions:
- Before you observe, you need to go on a tour of the ED. Tours are given by one of the T1 representatives.
- You can stay as long as you wish; there is no minimum amount of time that you must stay.
- Please have the form signed by the ED STAFF PHYSICIAN (not a resident).
- Don't forget to wear Tulane green scrubs, white coat, and Tulane ID!
Here are some tips:
- The busiest times are usually Friday and Saturday nights.
- You may observe with 1 to 2 other students. Do NOT go to the ED with large groups of people. You will get in the way more and learn less.
- Introduce yourself to the ER physicians. The more assertive you are, the more you will learn and the more you will be allowed to do. Most residents and fourth year students working in the ED enjoy teaching. However, they won't seek you out because they are far too busy.
- Beware! You will be exposed to body fluids and you may get fluids on your skin and clothes. Wear Tulane green scrubs, white coat and Tulane ID!
- Have fun. Remember: you are there to gain experience and learn.
