The Tulane University Institutional Review Board (IRB) requires ALL Investigators and research personnel conducting research under the auspices of Tulane University to complete the CITI educational modules. Additionally, the IRB requires all IRB staff and Board members to complete the educational modules and maintain sufficient knowledge of all applicable federal, state and local regulations. The Tulane IRB has incorporated the CITI training into our human research protection program in response to the NIH requirement of October 1, 2000, which requires education on the protection of human research participants for all investigators submitting NIH applications for grants or proposals for contracts or receiving new or non-competing awards for research involving human subjects. The CITI training module expires three years after the date of completion. The IRB office will send out a notification approximately two months prior to the expiration. At that time, you will be required to take the CITI refresher course. The Tulane IRB implemented the CITI training course in August 2005. Any investigator who completed a human research training prior to this date will be required to complete the CITI course by the January deadline. Overview and History of CITI The Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) was founded in March 2000 as a collaboration between the University of Miami and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to develop a web based training program in human research subjects protections. The first version of the CITI Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects, hosted at the University of Miami , was offered to participants on September 3, 2000. In December 2000, the CITI Course site was made available to institutions by subscription. As of February 2006, the CITI Program has been used by over 578 participating institutions and facilities from around the world. How to Register for the Course The CITI website is https://www.citiprogram.org . You should click on the “Register for CITI Course” link on the CITI home page. You will be redirected and asked to select your institution. Tulane University is located under the ‘all others” list. Once you have entered in all the requested registration information, you will be asked to select a group appropriate to your research activities.
