Dr. Jean-Claude Ulysse
MARCH Obstetrician-Gynecologist and Coordinator for the MARCH PMTCT program to prevent maternal to child transmission of HIV.
Born in 1968 to a family that raised goats in the village of Torbeck, Les Cayes, Dr. Ulysse overcame many obstacles in order to fulfill his dream of attending medical school. A graduate of the State University Medical School in Port-au-Prince, Dr. Ulysse distinguished himself with a perfect attendance record throughout his training. He has been employed with MARCH in Mirebalais since 2001.
His motivation:
“As an obstetrician, I work to reduce the excessively high maternal mortality rate that we have here in Haiti. As the Coordinator of the MARCH PMTCT program, I feel I am defending the human race which is menaced by the plague of HIV. My goals are to help the children of HIV infected mothers to be born safely, and to support and provide care for persons that have become ill with HIV/AIDS”.
His dream:
“That one day we will be able to enjoy a basic standard of health care that includes screening and treatment for cervical cancer- something we cannot do in Mirebalais with our current lack of infrastructure”.
