  Grading Policy
A. Final Examinations
NBME Board Exam - A two hour & 10 minute written test of approximately 100 questions 25%
Practical Exam - A two hour practical examination evaluating the student's ability to read real electrocardiograms, X-Rays, slides, etc. 10%
B. Ward Grade #1: Based on Intern, Resident, and Faculty Evaluations 27.5%
C. Ward Grade #2: Based on Intern, Resident, and Faculty Evaluations 27.5%
D. Four admission write-ups and two case discussions 10%
    TOTAL: 100%
To pass the course the student must:
  1. Receive at least a "Pass" on all student evaluations by faculty
  2. Obtain a subject test score of 59 (8th percentile nationally) on the two hour NBME written "Board Exam".
  3. Pass the Practical Examination. T-3 must score greater than 70% on each portion of the Practical Exam to pass the course. If the score is less than 70%, then the student will receive an Incomplete for the course and will be required to complete remedial work in EKG and/or CXR interpretation. Upon successful completion of this remedial work, the student will then be assigned a final clerkship grade.
  4. Complete all four write-ups and two case discussions
Each ward grade will account for 27.5% of the student's final grade. All students are evaluated by the ward attending, resident, and intern. Although the resident and intern grades are significant, most of the ward grade is determined by the ward attending. The student's final grade (honors, high pass, pass, condition, or fail) is assigned by the Junior Medicine Clerkship Committee.

Condition Grade

If the student passes all other aspects of the course, but receives less than 59 subject test score on the NBME "Board Exam", then the student will receive a CONDITION GRADE. Students who receive a "condition" must retake the two hour NBME "Board Exam."

To pass the course after receiving a "condition" the student must score at least 59 on the "Board Exam." Should he/she fail this examination, that student will be required to repeat the entire Junior Medicine Clerkship prior to his/her final year in Medical school. A student who receives a failing grade on any of the faculty evaluation forms will be notified immediately and their clerkship performance will be reviewed by the Junior Medicine Clerkship Committee. Unless significant evidence is presented to the contrary, the student will fail the course.

Junior Medicine is a prerequisite for any senior level medicine courses; therefore the junior clerkship must be successfully completed before a student may enroll in senior medicine core or elective courses.

Unexcused Absences

An unexcused absence is adequate grounds for failing this course. Dr. Kahn is the only person who can officially excuse students from their clinical and academic duties. Unexcused absences from 1). required conferences, (Grand Rounds and core lecture series, 2). ward assignments, etc. are regarded as serious and unprofessional. If the student is unable to perform the expected student duties, then the student must notify Dr. Kahn and the student programs office ASAP of the reason for the absence. If the student is on a ward team, then the student should also notify the ward team.

Student evaluations are available for review at the end of each rotation.

School Holidays

Students must fulfill any clinical care responsibilities. Tulane University and or nationally observered single-day holidays should be treated in a manner similar to weekend coverage for T-3's and T-4's.

Conclusion/Course Evaluation

We are interested in improving the Junior Medicine experience and welcome student feedback and suggestions. It is very important that students evaluate the Junior Medicine Clerkship at the end of the course. Student input is considered VERY important because it helps us identify areas of weakness where we need to improve as well as to bestow praise where deserved. The students are encouraged to contact the student programs office, Dr. LeDoux, Dr. Bass, Dr. Wiese or the attending physician for any concerns or suggestions.

The Student Programs Office is located on the 7th floor (rm. 7012)/582-7814. The office is open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
