Unique Aspects of our Hospital Systems
The Tulane/Ochsner Pediatric Residency is unique in the United States. It combines pediatric residency training in a large multi-specialty group practice, as well as being based in a classic university practice; and, at the same time, still provides ample community-based experiences. The three largest multi-specialty group practice clinics in the United States are the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Ochsner Clinic. The Mayo Clinic has its own medical school and the Cleveland Clinic has its own medical school as well (under the auspices of Case Western University). However, the Tulane/Ochsner program provides an independent, yet totally collegial collaboration between two great institutions; one of which is a big multi-specialty clinic (the 3rd largest in the United States), and the other is a classic academic university center (Tulane University). The opportunity to have residents exposed to such divergent, yet complimentary systems, is unique in any program. In addition to that, the program also provides a community-based experience both in the suburban general practice setting, as well as in the inner city setting. There is no other pediatric residency program quite like it in the United States. We provide a unique opportunity for different methods of learning, culminating in the best overall educational experience for residents and students. In this unique educational setting, residents can determine which approach is the best for them, whether they do general pediatrics or subspecialty care. We are frequently asked about the combined nature of our pediatrics training, having two major teaching sites. Our two major hospitals, the Tulane Hospital and the Ochsner Hospital are located only 15 - 20 minutes (driving time) apart. These two independant facilities work in tandem to complete your training. Faculty frequently travel between the institutions for patient care and provide cross coverage in some sections. Video conferencing connects the training locations for conferences and meetings. Residents at all sites and at all times are under the direction of the Program Director, Hosea Doucet, MD, who is based at Tulane. The Associate Program Director for Ochser, Charles Kantrow, MD, oversees the on-site activities at Ochsner. We also have an Associate Program Director who travels between the hospital sites and whose main responsibility is assisting the residents with their career development plans. Our residents benefit greatly from the opportunity to experience a variety of settings. They enjoy the variety, and learn immensely from the exposure to multiple types of patients and institutions. Their career choices are expanded from having a variety of training experiences. Our training paves the foundation for you to practice Pediatrics in the setting of your choice. _______________________________________________________________________________ |
