J. Bennett Johnston Health and Environmental Research Building
The J. Bennett Johnston Health and Environmental Research Building (JBJ Building) is a seven story, state-of-the-art facility which houses the Center for Bioenvironmental Research and other Tulane research activities. The 184,000 square foot building is designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. The laboratories are configured in 360 square foot modules. Modular design permits economical reconfiguration of the lab space as research activities and needs change.
The JBJ building includes three floors of medical laboratories which will accelerate research by Tulane Uiversity Medical Center faculty members. Space in these laboratories has been allocated according to several strategic priorities of the Medical Center, including the Cancer Center, Oncology, Nephrology, Infectious Disease, Neurosciences, and Cardiobiology. The seventh floor houses a state-of-the-art vivarium (see separate description).
The Shell Oil Company donated the 2,400 square foot Research/Teaching Laboratory for Environmental Biotechnology. It provides state-of-the-art biotechnology facilities to foster the development of measures for the prevention of adverse health effects of known environmental agents at the molecular level and providing guidance to industry to lessen those effects.
