Thank you for your interest in senior clinical training at Tulane University School of Medicine during your elective time. Below is a brief statement of the requirements for visiting students and some general information. For additional information, please see our Clinical Clerkships page, which lists all the clinical clerkships available to visiting students.
We ask that you read the material carefully and return all the requested the form(s) as soon as possible. Please note that all forms are in PDF format, and you will have to download Acrobat Reader to open and print them.
- Completed application form for each clerkship (you may duplicate the form if you wish to apply for more than one rotation).
- A letter from your Dean or his authorized representative stating that you are a senior student in good standing and that you have approval to study at Tulane.
- Verification of malpractice and personal health insurance coverages.
- A check in the amount of $100.00 representing a non-refundable application processing fee required of all visiting students from accredited LCME schools. (Please make your check payable to Tulane Medical School, Student Affairs.)
- Immunization certification by your dean or his authorized representative that you have had a negative response to TB Screening and that you are immune, or have been immunized, to Rubella and Rubeola.
Abbreviated Statement of Policies: American Visiting Students

The visiting student must be a duly enrolled medical student in a fully accredited medical school in the United States or Canada. Exceptions require special approval by Tulane Medical School administration and faculty. |

A visiting student may pursue an academic program at Tulane Medical School for no less than four weeks and no more than eight weeks unless special permission is obtained from the Director of Student Affairs. |
| 3. |
Clerkships completed by visiting students do not carry credit within Tulane Medical School; therefore, visiting students are not eligible for the M.D. degree from Tulane University. |
| 4. |
For eight weeks or less, no tuition is charged. For more than eight weeks, charges are based on Tulane Medical School tuition and are proportionate to time spent by the visiting student. |

The visiting student must have written approval from his/her dean or from the dean's authorized representative. |
| 6. |
The visiting student must be in good standing in his own medical school. |
| 7. |
Visiting students are routinely accepted only in our senior clerkships and only from the senior year of his medical school. A student in the junior year may arrange for a clerkship to be taken in his senior year. |

The visiting student is not to be supported nor compensated by Tulane Medical School funds. |

Malpractice insurance is required; coverage cannot be provided for visiting students by Tulane Medical School, and there are no individual policies available in Louisiana at this time. |

The visiting student must provide his/her own health insurance. Tulane's Student Health Office will provide initial ambulatory medical care for new illnesses or injuries but is not obligated to provide continuous care unless coverage by the student's personal health insurance policy permits it. |

The visiting student must make his/her own provisions for room and board and parking. He may rent a room and lease parking space from the university if there are openings.. Other policies concerning intramural aspects of clerkships for visiting students are not set forth in this abbreviated statement of policy. |
American and International Visiting Students: General Statement
Tulane is pleased to offer clinical clerkships of the senior year to students of other medical schools, including member schools of the Association of American Medical Colleges and Canadian affiliate members, and upon special approval, foreign medical schools. The visiting student must be a senior in a four-year curriculum when the clerkship is taken and must have completed the equivalent of Tulane's basic clerkships in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry and neurology, and obstetrics and gynecology. The visiting student must be in good academic standing at his own institution and must have written approval from the Dean, or his authorized representative, of the visiting student's medical school. The student or the student's school must provide personal health insurance. Proof of health insurance and malpractice insurance must be submitted with the application. International students are NOT required to have malpractice insurance, only health insurance.
Clerkships must be taken in accordance with Tulane's schedule. These clerkships are of one month's duration (see dates below). If the visiting student is interested in a clerkship which is offered at the Ochsner Foundation Hospital, he/she should apply directly to that institution (Office of Graduate Medical Education, Ochsner Foundation Hospital, 1516 Jefferson Highway, New Orleans, Louisiana 70121, (504) 842-3260. The visiting student should notify his/her own Dean of Student Affairs that the final grade and evaluation will be awarded by Ochsner and not by Tulane.

Applications from visiting students are processed after our own junior medical students have signed up for their Senior clerkships, usually between the end of April and mid-May.
There is a $100 non-refundable fee for processing the application of students from American medical schools and a $300 application fee for students from foreign medical schools. Please make checks payable to the TUMS Office of Student Affairs, and enclose it with your application. Please note that applications will not be processed without this fee.
Students are responsible for their housing and parking expenses and for making their own arrangements.
